40 x 30 x 15 cm (16 x 12 x 6 in) is the most common personal item size, and US airlines often allow up to 18 x 14 x 8 in (46 x 36 x 20 cm). The tables below show the under-seat bag limit for 110 airlines. Where an airline publishes no dimensions, the row says so, and the item only has to fit under the seat.

Personal item size for US, Canadian and Mexican airlines

18 x 14 x 8 in (46 x 36 x 20 cm) is the personal item limit at American, Frontier and Viva Aerobus. United allows 17 x 10 x 9 in, and JetBlue 17 x 13 x 8 in. Delta, Southwest, Alaska and Hawaiian publish no dimensions, so a backpack or handbag only has to fit under the seat. On Frontier and other ultra-low-cost basic fares, this is the only free bag.

What counts as a personal item?

1 personal item is included on almost every fare, and it must fit under the seat in front of you. Airlines usually accept a backpack, handbag, laptop bag or briefcase. Coats, a small bag of airport purchases and medical or assistive devices often do not count, but each airline sets its own list.

Personal item vs carry-on

40 x 30 x 15 cm (16 x 12 x 6 in) is a typical personal item, about a third of the volume of a 55 x 40 x 23 cm carry-on. The personal item goes under the seat, and the carry-on goes in the overhead bin. Full-service fares usually include both. Low-cost base fares often include only the personal item, so the overhead bag costs extra.
