Porter Airlines allows one carry-on up to 55 x 40 x 23 cm (21.5 x 15.5 x 9 in) plus a personal item on Standard, Flexible, Freedom and PorterReserve fares, while Basic gets the personal item only. Within Canada and the US, a first checked bag costs $50 to $63.25 when added at booking. Pets fly only in the cabin, never in the hold.
The standard carry-on can measure up to 55 x 40 x 23 cm (21.5 x 15.5 x 9 in). Standard, Flexible, Freedom and PorterReserve fares include it alongside a personal item. Basic is the exception on Canadian, US and sun routes: you get the personal item only, and anything else must be checked. Porter publishes no carry-on weight limit and doesn't say whether wheels and handles count, so measure the bag fully packed.
On transatlantic flights every fare, Basic included, gets two carry-on items.
Your personal item can be up to 33 x 43 x 16 cm (13 x 17 x 6 in). Porter lists a briefcase, purse, small backpack, camera bag, laptop or small garment bag as examples. Every fare includes one, and on a Basic fare it is the only free bag you can bring on board.
A carry-on weight limit is not published by Porter. What it does enforce is size: every carry-on has to fit the sizing units at check-in and at the gate. A bag that fails the sizer is checked at the gate for a fee, which starts at $80 for a first bag under the May 2026 pricing.
Basic includes 1 personal item and no checked bag. Standard adds the 55 x 40 x 23 cm carry-on but still no checked bag. Flexible and Freedom include 1 checked bag of up to 23 kg (50 lb). Both PorterReserve fares include 2 checked bags at 23 kg each, a dedicated check-in counter and early boarding.
Porter doesn't publish a boarding group for Basic fares.

For bookings made on or after May 7, 2026, a first checked bag within Canada and the US costs $50 to $63.25 when added at booking. The second runs $65 to $80.50, and a third or later bag $110 to $258.75. Waiting costs more: at the airport the first bag is $60 to $80.50 and the second $75 to $97.75. Porter shows prices in CAD or USD depending on the site edition.
Porter publishes each bag fee as a price range rather than a single number.
| BAG | AT BOOKING | AT AIRPORT | BEFORE MAY 7, 2026 (BOOKING) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | $50 to $63.25 | $60 to $80.50 | $40 to $51.75 |
| 2nd | $65 to $80.50 | $75 to $97.75 | $55 to $63.25 |
| 3rd+ | $110 to $258.75 | not retrieved | $100 to $258.75 |
Each checked bag can weigh up to 23 kg (50 lb) and measure up to 158 cm (62 in) in total length, width and height. Heavier bags are accepted up to 32 kg (70 lb) for an extra charge. PorterReserve bags follow the same 23 kg limit.
Overweight bags cost $20 to $25 per kilogram above 23 kg (50 lb), and Porter charges this on bags between 23 kg and 32 kg (70 lb). An oversized bag, over 158 cm (62 in), costs $100 to $115 per bag. These charges apply to a maximum of 2 pieces per passenger, on top of the regular bag fee.
Charging by the kilogram means a bag 1 kg over the limit costs far less than one at 32 kg.
Three groups get free checked bags beyond what the fare includes: - VIPorter Venture members get the 1st bag free. - VIPorter Ascent and VIPorter First members get the 1st and 2nd bags free. - Flexible, Freedom and PorterReserve fares carry their own free bags, 1 or 2 depending on the fare. The BMO VIPorter World Elite Mastercard adds a complimentary checked bag per flight for cardholders and up to 8 guests on the booking. Porter publishes no military waiver.
Yes, house cats and small dogs fly in the cabin for $50 to $57.50 per pet, per direction. The carrier must be soft-sided and no larger than 55 x 40 x 27 cm, and it uses up your standard carry-on allowance. You can bring one carrier with one pet. Pets can't travel in the baggage hold on any Porter flight, so larger animals have no option.
Porter has no checked pet option at all, so a dog too big for a 55 x 40 x 27 cm carrier can't fly with it.
A golf bag counts as 1 checked bag with no oversize fee, and a pair of skis with poles and boots, or a snowboard with boots, also counts as 1 bag. Bicycles cost $50 plus taxes per direction. Porter won't accept any sports item over 32 kg (70 lb) or 203 cm (80 in) in total dimensions. Small musical instruments in a hard case up to 9 kg (20 lb) can travel as your carry-on.
Porter places sizing units at both check-in and the gate, and a carry-on that doesn't fit is checked for a fee of $80 to $103.50 for a first bag. Basic passengers who show up with a full-size carry-on face that charge. GatePorter, a separate service, lets you leave your bag at the aircraft bridge before boarding and collect it on arrival.
GatePorter hands your carry-on back at the aircraft door instead of the carousel.
Every transatlantic fare includes 2 carry-on items, Basic included. Basic pays $75 to $86.25 for the first checked bag, while Standard, Flexible and Freedom include it. A second bag costs $110 to $126.50 and a third $230 to $264.50 on every fare.
| BAG | BASIC | STANDARD, FLEXIBLE, FREEDOM |

No. On Canadian, US and sun routes, Basic includes only a personal item up to 33 x 43 x 16 cm. A larger bag must be checked, and at the gate that costs $80 to $103.50.
Yes. Porter says paying in advance is always cheaper. A first bag within Canada and the US costs $50 to $63.25 at booking but $60 to $80.50 at the airport.
Two. Both PorterReserve fares include 2 checked bags of up to 23 kg (50 lb) and 158 cm (62 in) each, plus a dedicated check-in counter.
Yes. The pet carrier replaces your standard carry-on, so you keep only your personal item. The carrier must be soft-sided and fit within 55 x 40 x 27 cm.
No, not if it measures a full 22 inches. Porter's limit is 21.5 x 15.5 x 9 in (55 x 40 x 23 cm), so a bag sold as 22 inches is too long for the sizer.
Yes. The World Elite card includes a complimentary checked bag per flight for the cardholders and up to 8 guests on the same reservation.
Yes. Porter carries 1 stroller and 1 car seat per child free of charge, outside the paid baggage allowance.
