Qantas Economy includes 1 checked bag up to 23 kg (50 lb) within Australia, 1 piece up to 32 kg (70 lb) to North and South America, and 30 kg (66 lb) in total to the rest of the world. Every Qantas flight comes with checked baggage. Carry-on is capped at 7 kg (15 lb) in international Economy but 14 kg (30 lb) on domestic flights.
Economy gets 1 checked piece up to 23 kg (50 lb) on Australian domestic flights, 1 piece up to 32 kg (70 lb) to North and South America, and a 30 kg (66 lb) weight allowance everywhere else. Premium Economy doubles the domestic count to 2 pieces of 23 kg and gets 40 kg (88 lb) on rest-of-world routes. Business gets 2 pieces of 32 kg in Australia and the Americas, or 40 kg elsewhere. First gets 3 pieces to the Americas and 50 kg (110 lb) on other international routes. No piece may exceed 32 kg.
Qantas switches from a weight system to a piece system on flights to North and South America, so the same Economy ticket gets one 32 kg bag there instead of 30 kg spread across several bags.
| CABIN | AUSTRALIA DOMESTIC | NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA | REST OF WORLD |
|---|---|---|---|
| Economy | 1 x 23 kg | 1 x 32 kg | 30 kg total |
| Premium Economy | 2 x 23 kg | 2 x 32 kg | 40 kg total |
| Business | 2 x 32 kg | 2 x 32 kg | 40 kg total |
| First | Not listed | 3 x 32 kg | 50 kg total |
The overhead bag can measure 56 x 36 x 23 cm (22 x 14 x 9 in), and Qantas counts wheels and packed-away handles in that size. Cabins that allow a second bag accept an underseat bag up to 34 x 48 x 23 cm (13 x 18 x 9 in). A non-rigid garment bag of 114 x 60 x 11 cm also counts toward the allowance. Staff check carry-on at the airport, and a bag over the limits goes in the hold.
Both, depending on the flight. International Economy allows 7 kg (15 lb) across 1 overhead bag and 1 personal item. Domestic Economy and Business, plus international Premium Economy, Business and First, allow 14 kg (30 lb) across an overhead bag, an underseat bag and a personal item, with no single item over 10 kg (22 lb). QantasLink Dash 8 Q400 flights drop back to 7 kg. Flights departing India allow one overhead bag only: 7 kg in Economy, 10 kg in Business.
Domestic Economy gets the same 14 kg carry-on as Business, which makes an Australian domestic Economy ticket more generous than an international one.
| FLIGHT AND CABIN | BAGS | WEIGHT |
|---|---|---|
| Domestic Economy and Business | Overhead + underseat + personal item | 14 kg total, 10 kg per item |
| QantasLink Dash 8 Q400 | Overhead + personal item | 7 kg |
| International Economy | Overhead + personal item | 7 kg |
| International Premium Economy, Business, First | Overhead + underseat + personal item | 14 kg total, 10 kg per item |
| Departing India | 1 overhead bag | 7 kg Economy, 10 kg Business |
No dimensions are published for the Qantas personal item. The carry-on page names three examples: a cross body bag, a small handbag or a laptop in a slim bag. It sits inside the cabin weight limit, so in international Economy the personal item and overhead bag share 7 kg.
Each checked piece is capped at 32 kg (70 lb), whatever your total allowance. Size limits differ by route: 140 cm (55 in) in total dimensions on domestic flights and 158 cm (62 in) on international flights. QantasLink Dash 8 flights take only 1 checked piece up to 23 kg (50 lb).
At the airport, an extra domestic piece costs A$161, and any domestic piece over 23 kg (50 lb) adds a A$64 heavy charge. An extra piece costs A$315 to North and South America and US$210 coming back. Other international routes charge by the kilo: A$21 to New Zealand and the Pacific, A$37 to Asia, A$63 from Asia to the UK and Europe, and A$84 from Australia to Europe, South Africa and the UK. Prepaying online is cheaper, up to three hours before departure, but Qantas doesn't list those prices on the page.
Gold members in Economy get 2 pieces up to 32 kg (70 lb) each within Australia and 46 kg (101 lb) on rest-of-world routes. Platinum and Platinum One get the same domestic 2 pieces and 50 kg (110 lb) elsewhere. Silver members and Qantas Club members get 1 piece up to 32 kg in Australia, and Silver rises to 42 kg (92 lb) on rest-of-world routes. These extras apply on Qantas flights only.
| TIER (ECONOMY) | AUSTRALIA | REST OF WORLD |
|---|---|---|
| Silver / Qantas Club | 1 x 32 kg | 42 kg (Silver) |
| Gold | 2 x 32 kg | 46 kg |
| Platinum / Platinum One | 2 x 32 kg | 50 kg |
Up to 3 infant items check in free, each up to 32 kg (70 lb), and children aged 2 to 11 get 2 free child items at the same weight. A collapsible stroller can go in the cabin as a piece of the adult's carry-on if it fits overhead and weighs 7 kg (15 lb) or less. Dash 8 and Embraer E190 flights take strollers in the hold only. A small bag of food and nappies is allowed on top of the adult's carry-on.
No pets fly in the cabin: Qantas carries only approved Service Dogs there, free of charge. Dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, domestic fish and birds travel in the hold through Qantas Freight, booked up to 100 days ahead in a crate you supply. Pets leaving Australia must be booked through a pet travel specialist. Qantas Freight does not publish pet prices on its information pages.
| OPTION | FEE | RULE |
|---|---|---|
| In cabin | Not allowed | Approved Service Dogs only |
| Service Dogs | Free | Approval needed |
| Domestic, Qantas Freight | Not published | Book up to 100 days ahead; IATA crate |
| International | Not published | Pet travel specialist |
Yes, each sports item counts as 1 piece of your checked allowance. Golf bags skip the normal size limit on Qantas-operated flights. Surfboards in a board bag can weigh up to 32 kg (70 lb) and measure up to 277 cm (109 in), or 240 cm on Dash 8 aircraft. Longer boards go as freight. One ski set per passenger is allowed.
Damage on a domestic flight must be reported within 3 days of receiving the bag, or 7 days on international flights. Delayed domestic baggage claims are due within 21 days, and a whole lost item on any flight within 21 days of when it should have arrived. Keep the bag tag on a damaged item.
