Jetstar's Starter fare includes 7kg of carry-on across 2 items, and the main item can't exceed 56 x 36 x 23 cm. Checked bags cost extra on Starter; bought at the airport, the first 20kg costs AUD $120 on Australian domestic flights. From 2 February 2027, Starter on Jetstar Airways (JQ) flights shrinks to one underseat bag of 40 x 30 x 20 cm.
Starter fares allow 7kg of carry-on spread across 2 items, and the main item can't exceed 56 x 36 x 23 cm. That bag goes in the overhead locker, while the small item sits under the seat in front. Jetstar doesn't say whether wheels and handles count toward the size, so measure the bag as you'd pack it. This rule covers JQ flights departing before 2 February 2027 and all Jetstar Japan (GK) flights.
Jetstar Japan (GK) keeps the 7kg two-item rule after JQ flights switch to size-based allowances.
No dimensions are published for the second item. Jetstar describes it as a handbag or thin laptop bag that fits under the seat, and it shares the same 7kg as your main bag. Everything you carry on board counts toward that weight, laptops and handbags included. A garment bag up to 114 x 60 x 11 cm and one small duty-free bag are allowed on top.
Yes, 7kg is a hard limit and Jetstar says it monitors baggage at the airport, with excess fees if you go over. The total covers both items together. Buying +7kg Extra Carry-On raises the limit to 14kg, but no single item can weigh more than 10kg.
From 2 February 2027, economy fares on Jetstar Airways (JQ) flights include one underseat bag of up to 40 x 30 x 20 cm. An overhead bag of up to 56 x 36 x 23 cm needs Priority Carry-on, sold as an upgrade or in select bundles, and no bag can weigh more than 10kg. The +7kg Extra Carry-On product ends for those flights. If you booked before 5 August 2026 for travel after the change, Jetstar adds Priority Carry-on at no cost.
Bookings made before 5 August 2026 for flights from 2 February 2027 get Priority Carry-on free, whatever the fare.

Starter Plus, Packed and Flex Plus each include 20kg of checked baggage. Starter, Boost and More include no checked bag, although Boost and More let you buy one at a discounted rate. Flex keeps the checked bag optional but raises carry-on to 14kg on JQ domestic flights. Max is the top economy bundle and usually includes about 30kg of checked baggage with the standard 7kg carry-on.
Product guides for bookings made before 11 September 2025 follow the older Starter fare rules.

At the airport, the first 20kg of checked baggage costs AUD $120 on JQ domestic flights and AUD $170 on JQ international flights. Jetstar publishes no fixed online price because checked baggage prices vary by route, and it suggests adding bags before you reach the airport. You buy checked baggage by total weight, not per bag, at booking or later in Manage booking.
| WHERE YOU BUY | JQ DOMESTIC | JQ INTERNATIONAL |
|---|---|---|
| Online or Manage booking | Varies by route | Varies by route |
| Airport, first 20kg | AUD $120 | AUD $170 |
You can buy up to 40kg of checked baggage per passenger, and no single bag can weigh more than 32kg. The allowance is a weight total, so 20kg can be one bag or two. Business Class includes 30kg and can add 10kg more to reach the same 40kg ceiling.
Each kilogram over your prepaid checked allowance costs AUD $30 on domestic flights and AUD $50 on international flights. Bags longer than 1 metre in any direction count as oversized and carry a per-item handling fee: AUD $30 online or $35 at the airport domestically, and AUD $40 or $45 internationally. Oversized items must be under 2.3 m, or 2.77 m on JQ international Boeing 787 flights.
| CHARGE | DOMESTIC | INTERNATIONAL |
|---|---|---|
| Excess per kg | AUD $30 | AUD $50 |
| Oversized, booked online | AUD $30 | AUD $40 |
| Oversized, at airport | AUD $35 | AUD $45 |
| Oversized length cap | 2.3 m | 2.3 m (2.77 m on 787) |
At the gate on domestic flights you pay AUD $85 for +7kg Extra Carry-On or AUD $125 to have the bag checked. On international flights those charges rise to AUD $110 and AUD $175. Fixing it earlier is cheaper: +7kg costs AUD $60 at domestic check-in and AUD $85 on international routes.
| WHEN | DOMESTIC | INTERNATIONAL |
|---|---|---|
| +7kg at check-in | AUD $60 | AUD $85 |
| +7kg at the gate | AUD $85 | AUD $110 |
| Excess fee at the gate (bag checked) | AUD $125 | AUD $175 |
Business Class includes 30kg of checked baggage and 14kg of carry-on across two items on flights before 2 February 2027. Both Business Class and Business Max can buy an extra 10kg checked, for 40kg in total. From 2 February 2027, the carry-on becomes one underseat bag of 40 x 30 x 20 cm plus one overhead bag of 56 x 36 x 23 cm.
No pets fly on Jetstar, in the cabin or the hold, and the only animals allowed are accredited service dogs weighing up to 45kg. They ride on the floor at the handler's feet. You must tell Jetstar about the dog when you book and carry its identity card or a Jetstar permission letter.
| ANIMAL | ALLOWED | RULE |
|---|---|---|
| Pets in cabin | No | Not carried |
| Pets in hold | No | Not carried |
| Service dogs | Yes | Accredited, up to 45kg, notify at booking |
Yes, families can check 4 baby items free on any fare: one stroller or pram, one portable cot, one car seat or booster, and one portable high chair. These sit outside your paid checked allowance. Jetstar asks you to contact it ahead about car seats, since only a limited number fit on each flight.
Yes. Jetstar counts handbags and laptops toward the 7kg carry-on allowance, and the handbag is usually your second item, stored under the seat. Only a garment bag and one small duty-free bag ride free on top.
Yes, for JQ flights departing before 2 February 2027 and on Jetstar Japan flights. It takes you to 14kg with a 10kg cap per item. Jetstar stops selling it for JQ flights from 2 February 2027.
No. Starter includes only carry-on. You can add checked baggage when you book, later in Manage booking or through the Contact Centre, and at the airport the first 20kg costs AUD $120 on domestic flights.
32kg. That cap applies even if you bought 35kg or 40kg of allowance, so a heavy load needs to be split across two bags.
Yes, that is the exact main-item limit, as long as the bag and your small item together stay within 7kg. From 2 February 2027 on JQ flights, the same size needs Priority Carry-on.
