Qatar Airways' Economy Classic fare includes 25kg (55lb) of checked baggage on most routes, or 2 pieces of 23kg (50lb) each to and from Africa and the Americas. Two systems apply. Flights to or from Africa or the Americas use the piece concept, where you count bags of up to 23kg or 32kg each. Every other route uses the weight concept, where all your checked bags share one total, such as 25kg in Economy Classic. Qatar says exceptions apply on certain routes, and your booking confirmation shows the allowance for your trip.
| ROUTE | SYSTEM | MAX SIZE PER BAG |
|---|---|---|
| To/from Africa or the Americas | Piece concept | 158cm total |
| All other routes | Weight concept | 300cm total |
The cabin bag limit is 50 x 37 x 25 cm. Economy passengers get 1 piece up to 7kg (15lb), and Business and First passengers get 2 pieces up to 15kg (33lb) total. Qatar does not say whether wheels and handles count, so measure the bag with them. The bag must fit under the seat in front or in an enclosed overhead compartment.
On flights departing the United States, TSA rules limit you to 1 piece of hand baggage plus 1 personal item, whatever your cabin.
| CABIN | PIECES | WEIGHT | SIZE |
|---|---|---|---|
| Economy | 1 | 7kg (15lb) | 50 x 37 x 25 cm |
| Business | 2 | 15kg (33lb) total | 50 x 37 x 25 cm |
| First | 2 | 15kg (33lb) total | 50 x 37 x 25 cm |
No size is published for the extra items. Qatar lists them by type: one small purse or small briefcase, one blanket or coat, and one umbrella, among others. A laptop should go inside your cabin bag. If you carry the laptop bag separately, Qatar counts it as your cabin bag, which uses up the 1 piece Economy allows.
One checked bag can weigh no more than 32kg (70lb) on any route. Size limits depend on the system: 158cm total (height plus width plus depth) on Africa and Americas flights, and 300cm total on other routes. On a weight-concept ticket you still need to split heavy contents so no single bag passes 32kg.
An extra 23kg bag in Economy costs USD 130 between Africa and Qatar and USD 255 (CAD 350) on other piece-concept journeys such as the Americas. A 32kg extra bag costs USD 205 or USD 330 (CAD 450). On weight-concept routes you pay per kilo: USD 30 per kg from Europe to Qatar and QAR 80 per kg from Qatar to Europe. Buying online more than 6 hours before departure is cheaper.
Per-kilo rates from Qatar are charged in Qatari riyals, ranging up to QAR 140 per kg to Australasia.
