Austrian Airlines Baggage Allowance 2026

Economy checked bags can weigh up to 23 kg and Business bags up to 32 kg, each within 158 cm in total. On intercontinental routes, Economy Green and Premium Green include 1 x 23 kg, Business Green 2 x 32 kg and First Green 3 x 32 kg. In Europe, Economy Basic and Light include no checked bag, while Economy Comfort, Comfort Green and Flex include 1 x 23 kg and Business Comfort Green 1 x 32 kg. Long-haul Economy Classic includes about 1 x 23 kg and Flex about 2 x 23 kg.

Each cabin bag can measure 55 x 40 x 23 cm and weigh 8 kg. On short and medium-haul flights, Economy Light, Comfort, Comfort Green and Flex include 1 such bag plus a personal item, and long-haul Economy and Premium Economy get the same. Business and First passengers can bring 2 cabin bags of 8 kg each. The page doesn't say whether wheels and handles count toward the 55 x 40 x 23 cm.

Economy Basic includes 1 personal item of up to 40 x 30 x 15 cm and no overhead cabin bag on short and medium-haul flights. Austrian lists it apart from Economy Light, which keeps the 8 kg cabin bag. Neither Austrian's newsroom nor the Lufthansa Group newsroom gave a launch date we could confirm. On European routes, Basic and Light also lose the free ski allowance.

Austrian's own fares landing page still names the economy fares as Light, Saver, Basic and Flex, while its hand luggage page uses Basic, Light, Comfort, Comfort Green and Flex.

The personal item limit is 40 x 30 x 15 cm on every fare and in every class. Handbags, shopping bags and laptop bags all qualify, and Austrian asks you to put them under the seat in front of you. No separate weight limit is published for it. A folding garment bag of up to 57 x 54 x 15 cm and 8 kg also appears on the hand luggage page.

A bag that breaks the rules costs between EUR 60 (USD 75) and EUR 110 (USD 125), depending on the route. Staff take it at the check-in counter or the boarding gate and send it in the hold. Austrian accepts only credit cards for this charge and says it is much higher than a prepaid checked bag. Departing the USA, TSA rules limit every passenger to 1 carry-on and 1 personal item through security, whatever the class or status.

Checked bags can measure up to 158 cm (length + width + height) and weigh up to 23 kg in Economy or 32 kg in Business. Austrian won't take any bag heavier than 32 kg or larger than 292 cm at check-in. Its Conditions of Carriage, dated 18 September 2026, repeat the 32 kg cap per bag.

No fixed excess price list is published: bags of 24 to 32 kg or 158 to 292 cm count as excess, and Austrian says the charge depends on your route and allowance. In Business, a bag of up to 32 kg is included but still counts as excess once it goes over 158 cm. Taking more than 5 extra bags means registering them by phone in advance.

One set of skis or a snowboard flies free on top of your allowance, except on Economy Basic and Light in Europe and on routes to, from or via the USA, Mexico and Central America. Golf bags and bicycles cost EUR 70 domestic, EUR 80 in Europe, EUR 100 to the Near and Middle East, EUR 200 on medium-haul and EUR 250 on long-haul routes, plus a EUR 10 to EUR 20 ticket service fee. Items must be registered first and stay within 32 kg and 3.15 m.

Golf equipment flies free for HON Circle members, Senators and Star Alliance Gold members under conditions on the sports page.

Yes. Cats and dogs can ride in the cabin when pet and container weigh 8 kg or less and the container fits 55 x 40 x 23 cm under the seat in front. The cabin charge is EUR 65 within Austria, EUR 80 in Europe and EUR 105, EUR 115 or EUR 125 on short, medium and long intercontinental routes. Larger pets go in the hold for EUR 80 to EUR 380, depending on route and container size. Since 4 May 2026, hold containers face extra requirements. Places per flight are limited, and the container likely takes the place of your cabin bag.

Each child gets 1 free item: a foldable stroller, baby carriage, handcart, bicycle trailer or baby carrier as checked baggage, or a certified child safety seat in the cabin. A fully collapsible pocket buggy up to 55 x 40 x 23 cm can go on board within the carry-on allowance. Electric pushchairs are not allowed.

Miles & More Frequent Travellers, Senators and HON Circle Members, plus Star Alliance Gold members, get about 1 extra checked bag on top of their fare allowance. Austrian's free baggage page confirms that status changes the allowance, but its status table didn't load, so treat the extra piece as an estimate. Golf equipment is carried free for HON Circle Members, Senators and Star Alliance Gold members.
