Japan Airlines includes two free checked bags in Economy and Premium Economy on international flights, and three in Business and First. The carry-on is one bag up to 55 x 40 x 25 cm (22 x 16 x 10 in) plus one personal belonging, capped at 10 kg (22 lb) combined. Domestic flights in Japan use weight instead: 20 kg free, or 45 kg in First Class.
Economy and Premium Economy passengers get 2 free checked bags on Japan Airlines international flights, and Business and First Class passengers get 3. Each bag can weigh about 23 kg (50 lb) in the two economy cabins and about 32 kg (70 lb) in Business and First. Each traveler can check up to 9 bags in the economy cabins and up to 10 in Business and First, with extra bags charged by route.
| CABIN | FREE CHECKED BAGS | MAXIMUM BAGS | WEIGHT PER BAG |
|---|---|---|---|
| Economy | 2 | 9 | About 23 kg (50 lb) |
| Premium Economy | 2 | 9 | About 23 kg (50 lb) |
| Business | 3 | 10 | About 32 kg (70 lb) |
| First | 3 | 10 | About 32 kg (70 lb) |
Your carry-on bag on international flights can measure 55 x 40 x 25 cm (22 x 16 x 10 in), or 115 cm (45 in) in total. You get one bag plus one personal belonging such as a handbag or shopping bag. Both items together must weigh 10 kg (22 lb) or less, so a heavy personal item eats into the bag's allowance.
No separate size is published for the personal belonging. JAL names handbags, shoulder bags and shopping bags, and says they must fit under the seat in front of you. The item counts toward the 10 kg (22 lb) combined weight with your carry-on bag.
Within Japan, JAL switches to a weight allowance: 20 kg of checked baggage is free for each passenger, or 45 kg in First Class, with no limit on the number of bags. Each bag must stay within 50 x 60 x 120 cm. Carry-on rules depend on the aircraft. Jets with 100 or more seats take a 55 x 40 x 25 cm bag, while aircraft under 100 seats cap it at 45 x 35 x 20 cm, and the 10 kg total applies on both.
On small aircraft, JAL says checked baggage is not guaranteed to travel even when it meets the size rules.
| RULE | AIRCRAFT WITH 100+ SEATS | AIRCRAFT UNDER 100 SEATS |
|---|---|---|
| Carry-on size | 55 x 40 x 25 cm (115 cm total) | 45 x 35 x 20 cm (100 cm total) |
| Carry-on weight | 10 kg total | 10 kg total |
| Free checked weight | 20 kg (First Class 45 kg) | 20 kg (not guaranteed on small aircraft) |
| Checked bag size | 50 x 60 x 120 cm | 50 x 60 x 120 cm |
The hard ceiling is 45 kg for any single checked piece on international flights. Free bags are about 23 kg in Economy and Premium Economy and about 32 kg in Business and First, within 203 cm (80 in) in total dimensions. Bigger bags are handled as bulky baggage, and large items or instruments over 32 kg (70 lb) fall into a special category.
Excess baggage charges on Japan Airlines are set by route. An extra bag between Japan and North America costs from about USD 200, and other routes are priced differently. Within Japan, weight over the free allowance is charged per kg, from about JPY 400 depending on the route. For valuables, you can raise JAL's liability limit to a declared value of up to USD5,000 by paying an excess value charge at check-in.
